Dear Tony: I laughed when I read his comment as I knew it would be interpreted that way. What I THINK he meant to say was that IF he had NOT raised rates as high as he did the bubble would have been EVEN BIGGER and the fall even more. So by his estimation by holding the economy from growing further he reduced the distance of the fall. Who knows, but IN MY JUDGEMENT this is a consumer induced slowdown. I think one of the reasons is the growing levels of consumer debt and I think the PRIMARY cause of that ISNT because I bought my wife a new Refridgerator BUT because the GOVERNMENT Rascals that they are, have raised taxes SO HIGH (when you combine Fed'l, state and Local its about 40% on average) that its CRUSHING out the available monies for savings and purchases. JDN
