Belgium Awards Mobile Phone Licences

date: 03rd March 2001, source by: Associated Press

Belgium's auction for four possible third-generation mobile
telephone licenses attracted only the three incumbent
operators- Belgacom unit Proximus, France Telecom's
Mobistar NV and KPN Orange Belgium NV.

Two of the licenses sold for the minimum action bid price of
150 million euros ($140 million).

Proximus, which is 75 percent owned by Belgacom, and 25
percent owned by Britain's Vodafone AirTouch PLC, paid
more because it wanted a license that would maintain its
leader-status in the Belgian market. It paid 150.2 million euros
($140.6 million).

Proximus has 58 percent of 3G subscribers, while Mobistar has
32 percent and KPN Orange has a 10 percent share of the
market.

Other potential bidders dropped out last month because of a
decline in investor sentiment in the sector across Europe and
growing doubts about the market for 3G phones which are
intended to offer greater video and Internet access.

Quite a contrast from the heady days of the U.K. and
German auctions. They offer four licenses and get only three
bids at or near the minimum. - DPR
