Mary, It is pretty easy to tell from the P4 microarchitecture that they made some painful tradeoffs to get the thing out the door. The L1 cache is much too small, and I guarantee you that was not their original intent. The single decoder and single ported cache are also things that no serious architect would do by design. The die size is very large, and they clearly cut back the design to keep it from being unmanageable. No market how Intel marketing tries to sanitize it, P4 has some serious problems.
