InterTrust Acquires PublishOne, Is Selected by Nokia Corp.

InterTrust Technologies Corp., a leading developer of peer-to-peer, distributed digital rights management (DRM) technology, has announced the acquisition of PublishOne, Inc. (http://www.publishone.com), a developer of online publishing and distribution services for business information publishers. PublishOne has been an InterTrust partner since its founding in 1999 and will now become a core part of InterTrust's offerings. The company has also announced that Nokia Corp., a provider of mobile communications, has agreed to license the InterTrust Commerce and Rights/System DRM solutions, and has selected InterTrust as its preferred DRM technology.

PublishOne
Both InterTrust and PublishOne are partners with Adobe Systems, Inc. Adobe will be including InterTrust's DRM technology in its Acrobat Reader product, which is the client software platform for the PublishOne service.

According to the announcement, PublishOne enables publishers to protect, distribute, and sell their content over the Internet without worrying about unauthorized use or reproduction. Its service provides the infrastructure for managing and selling content, including the encryption and protection of a publication, the processing of its sale, credit card clearing, and tracking and reporting on product performance.

"This acquisition significantly expands our presence in publishing and enables us to bring more complete DRM services and solutions to our partners and customers," said David Ludvigson, InterTrust's president and chief operating officer. "These DRM service components are key for our customers to accelerate bringing their solutions to market. PublishOne brings us an outstanding customer base as well as invaluable expertise in developing and delivering an end-to-end DRM service."

"By combining our services with InterTrust's platform, PublishOne will be able to accelerate the development of new services for the business publishing community as well as expand into new markets," said Kirk Loevner, PublishOne's founder and CEO. "PublishOne will be able to have a far broader impact on the industry by combining its expertise and offering with InterTrust's technology, partnerships, and resources. InterTrust's MetaTrust Utility model is especially compelling for publishers, as trustable standards and interoperability among computing platforms and devices are needed for 'publish once, consume safely anywhere.'" Loevner will join InterTrust's senior management team as senior vice president of sales and marketing.

Nokia Corp.
Nokia will acquire nearly 5 percent of InterTrust stock for $20 million. The Rights/System product line, under development at InterTrust for several years, currently includes the Rights/PD and Rights/Phone platforms. These platforms are designed to make secure rights-management solutions for digital content portable, practical, and productive. The Rights/PD and Rights/Phone systems extend the functions of InterTrust's DRM technology to portable devices, while meeting diverse vertical market requirements in entertainment, enterprise, and publishing, as well as other markets.
