More Icon stuff...
I’ve been looking through my system for icons beyond what's found in MorIcons.DLL, and found more than I expected. When selecting a replacement icon for a shortcut, right click, select Properties, Program tab, and Change Icon … button.
You’ll be presented with a default file and a window of icons this file contains. You’ll also have the opportunity to select a different icon file. Trouble is, how does one know which files contain icons? In short, they don’t. Earlier, I posted a hint for finding them. Here’s the results of that method when used on my machine…
COOL.DLL – Over forty general purpose icons PIFMGR.DLL – Lots of neat icons QUARTZ.DLL – Ten multimedia and music icons SHELL32.DLL – Too many to count, and a good variety SYNCUI.DLL – Ten folder(ish) icons ARTGALRY.DLL – A dozen really neat icons in a hard to find file MSTASK.DLL – A half dozen (Clocky) icons SHDOCVW.DLL – Thirty-eight OK icons MSHTML.DLL – Twenty-two ho-hum icons MYDOCS.DLL - My Document folder icon OCCACHE.DLL - Four dull icons RNAUI.DLL – Seven modem/dial-up icons SENDMAIL.DLL – One (envelope) icon FONTEXT.DLL – Four icons for fonts DATACLEN.DLL – One icon of a broom and disk SHSCRAP.DLL – One icon of a torn paper URL.DLL – Four OK icons SHDOCVW.DLL – Same icons as file with same name above ITSS.DLL – One interesting icon INETFIND.DLL – Internet Explorer search icon WABFIND.DLL – One icon of colourful open book
Some of these files contain one or a few icons. The odd file in the list contains a ton of icons. Someone with ambition and spare time may wish to describe the contents further
Again, these are the files I found on my system. Others will undoubtedly have a different list, although I’d expect many similarities.
Absent from this list are the icon files for non-Microsoft applications. If I find an easy way of catching them, I’ll post it.
