However, if the economy crumbles while the credit problem exists, wouldn't that just make the downfall just that much worse?

The best thing for a credit problem is to keep the economy humming so that debt can be paid off. Otherwise, everything else goes the way of the telcos. At some point the spiral will get so much worse and it will really spiral out of anyone's control.

Eveything, tax cuts, surpluses, debt reduction, etc. depends on a healthy economy.
