David:

Cash and investments were worth around $8/share, book value (stockholder equity) was about $10/share for the Q2 ended 12/1/00 . Both will go down around $0.70/share with the projected loss for the current Q3 (around $250 million, 365 million shares). So at the present stock price, you're getting the stock at liquidation value or less, and the ongoing business for nothing. Of course, it may just turn out that the ongoing business is worth just that - nothing. And if they keep losing $250 million/quarter, the cash/book value will decrease by about $0.70/share per quarter.

You can check this out for yourself by going through the balance sheet for Q2 which ended last 12/1/00. You can get this from EDGAR (or a shorter version from the 3Com website):

freeedgar.com

They report Q3 on 3/27 (ended 3/2/01 or thereabouts).

Good luck.
