I must apologize for my poor choice of words - by "stealing", I meant the kind one finds in an exciting race, where the #2 guy "steals" the lead position through skill and energy. I count amongst my good friends many of Japanese heritage, and have a tremendous amount of respect for the Japanese - with such a huge lead in electronics, I am really surprized that they managed to lose the lead position on computers, software, and semiconductor technology (things like 0.13u processes etc.) to the US, and things like wireless phones to the Europeans.
