Oh.... They were confused all right, Mr Bill "I Love AMD" Jackson, but not the way you think. The confusion they had, was the thought that they could blame their poor leadership and their poor Q3/Q4 2000 sales on their main supplier.... Intel.
They forgot the although the #1 rule in business is "The Customer Is Always Right", they forgot that the almost as important #2 Rule in business is "Don't Piss Off Your Supplier". They FINALLY realized, that violating either of those 2 rules, may make you look good momentarily, in the long run, it's bad for business. They made a big deal of rubbing intel's nose in it, and trumpeting to anyone who would listen that they were going strong to AMD... Look at what their foolishness has wrought.
They tried promoting AMD BIG TIME, at intel's expense, and they fell on their face. Now that they woke up, and fired that fool who led them astray, maybe they'll have a chance..... Maybe.
Oh, and by the way, as for their P4 Decision...
