hi tc

"StartupManager looks interesting"

in the interest of accuracy, startup manager is an altogether different program than what i was alluding to in my post. yes, i know, all of these managers begin to run together eventually. <g3>

the program i was touting, if you will, in that post was startup monitor. i'll spare you at this point and not take you on a journey through the differences between the two.

sorry for any confusion. and i will definitely inform the thread when i install the program. in fact, i want to do just that right now. given that the prog "runs transparently" ( mlin.net ) i may not have anything to report for awhile... at least until some program registers itself to run at startup. at that point i should get a notification from monitor asking if i want to allow the change.

[edit in: what comes to mind immediately is all of those instances of discovery in win98's 'system configuration utility', in which users are surprised to see how many applications have placed themselves in the start up routine. this tool should let the user know that realplayer, for instance, is trying to register itself.]

the security aspect of the tool (it will announce the presence of trojans like backorifice or netbus) is worth noting.

hope this helps

:)
