I think that I am reasonable in saying that if it is bad enough to die, it should be bad enough to overcome your fear of death.

I think we're making different assumptions here. If a person is capable of killing himself, then he should take care of it himself. I'm talking about when he's not able to do it himself--some debilitating condition that makes him physically unable to do it himself. Or someone with a deteriorating condition who may have to kill himself prematurely before he reaches the point of being incapable.

Regarding fear of death, there's nothing scary about death itself, IMO, it's what you may have to go through right before you die. There's the suffering.

I do not know why you would not be troubled by the likelihood of abuse

I am troubled about the possibility of abuse. Abuse in this case means murder. Murder is a crime and should be punished. People can be murdered walking down the street at night. We don't make walking down the street at night illegal. We make murder illegal.

Perhaps some of our difference is in our view of the consequences of death. Death, unless it is frightening or painful, is of no consequence to the person who dies. If you never know what hit you, as the saying goes, it's no longer about you because you're beyond being affected. It's those you leave behind who are affected. If you murder someone, it's those who are left alive who suffer. The murdered person is beyond caring. The humane thing is to minimize suffering.
