I think you bring up an excellent point though. The razor blade analogy was employed to get the industry to get a general understanding of what Iomega was doing.

1. Produce a low cost drive (razor) that uses disks (blades). With hard drives all your doing is buying razors over and over. The cost analogy is appropriate, but obviously (as your quote shows) we get people who go to polar extremes in drilling down on that analogy.

Maybe something more appropriate that is easier to understand is the VCR/Tapes analogy. Buy the VCR and then buy tapes that you fill up or categorize and then keep buying tapes for the single VCR.
