GRAND PRIX AUSTRALIA: SCHUMAKER WINS BUT TRACK OFFICIAL DIES
Michael Schumacher of Ferrari won the Australian Grand Prix, the first race towards the Formula One World Cup. Ferrari's success was completed by Barrichello in third place; Coulthard finished second. Schumi, starting in the pole position, jumped immediately into the lead in front of Hakkinen, Barrichello took off in fifth. During the fifth lap, tragedy struck when Villeneuve's car ran into Ralf Schumacher's BMW-Williams and ended up against a protection barrier. Although the two drivers emerged unhurt, one of the track officials was unfortunately killed. For nine laps the safety car was used. Then, during the 27th lap, Hakkinen left the track. From that point, for world champion Schumi, it was a walk in the park. For Luca Montezemolo, it was "a joyless victory", referring to the death of the official. |
