I think that a lot of companies have given up on planning because it's hard, but that doesn't mean that it's not worthwhile. Most real software projects take years to complete, and if you don't do some planning you won't ever finish them. I do agree that making a rigid plan with no milestones is obviously not a good idea unless you are so smart that you can really tell what's going to happen for the next 5 years (and I've never met anyone that smart), but I don't think that it's always a joke to plan. But I enjoyed the article.
