Eisenhower once noted that BATTLE PLANS were generally useless. Once the fighting got started, things never went according to plan.

However, he considered the exercise of BATTLE PLANNING to be indispensible, because that was the only time you had to opportunity to sit down and consider all the alternatives, all the enemey's strengths and weaknesses, all the right and wrong goals, etc. In short, the planning exercise gave the commanders the opportunity to really clarify what they were trying to achieve and understand the capabilities and obstacles. That knowledge became indispensible once the real battle started.
