Look, I'm not saying the Clintons were innocents. Neither Hilary's money dealings nor Bill's personal behavior, with its pattern of recklessness, bears close examination very well. And boy, have they been closely examined!

Eight years of Whitewater investigations and what were the final charges? A perjury trap in a sexual harrassment suit -- a suit, which if not entirely baseless, was so weak it would never have come to trial against any ordinary businessman. Of course the Republican Congress thought it their public duty to bring the governement to a halt for a year to impeach Clinton on these charges -- led by Dan Burton, the biggest skirt-chaser and harasser on the Hill. No wonder Clinton's job-approval ratings stayed in the 60's all the way through.

The FBI files thing would have been very serious if the information had been used against Clinton's enemies. As I recall, the whole Congress went ballistic when they heard it. What was finally proved there? Nothing much.

And don't talk to me about Al Gore's fund raising when the entire executive branch has just become a de facto subsidiary of the oil industry. Guess they got their money's worth.

What I am saying is that no matter how much the right believed every rumor about Clinton, is that nothing he was charged with, much less anything for which evidence was found, holds a candle to Nixons' systematic abuse of office.
