You over-simplify. You can't sell shit like DOS unless it's cheap.

If MSFT were realy smart then NT would be fully compatible with DOS,
Win95 & UNIX, 64 bit, and would be on the competition's hardware
(SPARC,68k etc).

UNIX is popular because it is/was almost free (apart from being portable).

MSFT is poor on long-term strategy, thats why they have to give away
Internet Explorer for free. Smart folks would have seen the potential
and built something before Netscape. MSFT will never make money out
of Internet Explorer.
