Jungjohann, of CIBC World Markets, said Lucent's specialty fiber business is what is most appealing to suitors. "They have a higher proportion of more advanced fiber than (does Corning), which might warrant a premium," he said.

I am confused about the statements

They may have a higher proportion of advanced fiber than Corning, but I'm told the fiber needed for ultra long-haul systems is not superior. There are so many kinds of fiber and so many different uses, it's hard to know how much value LU has. Since it's their one unit that's been profitable, I have to think there's a reason buyers are interested.

I have no doubt there's huge value in the engineers and scientists apart from what they're currently producing. We are at the beginning of a new era and for anyone looking ahead more than a year or two, locking up this kind of talent is not a bad idea.
