I don't think that the answer is going to church or deliberately trying to teach the sanctity of life.

I believe that we humans learn to value life (or not) very early in our lives. We learn that life has value when WE are shown that OUR life has value by caring and loving parents. If we as parents neglect to show our children that they are valuable and that they are loved, no amount of church or instruction is going to stop this trend.

All of this is, of course, MVHO.
