Kev,

Microsoft makes money *indirectly* from IE. Simply put, they give away the client to sell the servers. Without IE (free or otherwise), Microsoft's server sales would not be nearly as robust (especially, the mindshare aspect that IE gives them).

What they are doing, is very similar to Gillette's famous strategy: "Give away the razors to sell the blades." From the looks of Gillette's long-term stock price (symbol=G), it worked wonders for them.
