John Paul II an honorary Harlem Globetrotter The Holy Father has been officially declared an 'honorary player' of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team. Harlem Globetrotters were present at last Wednesday's general audience in St Peter's Square. They gave the Pope the team's official T-shirt, which had 'Pope John Paul II' printed on it. Some years ago, John Paul II was called a globetrotter in a book published in Italy, entitled "God's Globetrotter," referring to his numerous world trips. Meanwhile John Paul told players from Rome's football team that sport is 'the ideal environment for the exercise of numerous virtues'. But he warned them to be careful that they are not tempted to idolise the body, and that their games to not degenerate into violence. He also said that playing sport 'for economic gain' further challenges the potential for virtue. cathtelecom.com
