The buybacks on the whole are a waste, regardless of the tax consequences for an individual investor.

What if the foregone DOW dividends don't show up as capital gains? Then what? I think everyone who holds the shares through a significant decline would have rather had cash and what of the leverage used for these buybacks -- isn't that something the analysts should consider, too?

Instead of investing in real productive capacity they have simply flushed shareholders money down the toilet ... all the while leveraging the crap out of the businesses.
