ah, how easy it is to apply "basic capitalism" to a product assuming everything else is equal. You have to apply "basic capitalism" to everything or you are at the risk of sub-optimization and creating unreal reality.
There is no such thing as "an employer" passing on select benefits to an employee. I believe that would be a form of slavery. In my "basic capitalism" employer competes for the qualified work force by offering compensation in exchange for services. Benefits are part of that overall compensation package. Employer maximizes the profit and really does not care in what form benefits are passed down to employees. If employer can negotiate a better group rates then that is reflected in compensation package value and employer can either afford to attract a better qualified workers or reduce dollar compensation. Regardless the decision the group plans are better priced than individual policies.
