" That means chip
makers haven’t got a clue when business will pick up,
according to Lehman Brother chip industry analyst Dan Niles.
“Trying to make the judgement that this is the bottom
quarter is really stupid idea (for investors) because the
companies don’t even know,” he said.
Niles points to a similar chip downturn — from
September, 1995 through July 1996 — during which the SOX
index fell 52 percent. Within that drop, the index saw two
rallies of 26 and 27 percent, he said.
“With either (rally), if you had looked at that and said,
‘It’s the bottom; it’s time to buy,’ you would have lost a ton of
money,” he said.
