I would have to consider myself an outsider. When I went to the 8th grade orientation for next fall's freshmen, they told us black leather motorcycle jackets weren't allowed. Everybody turned around and looked at me because I was the only kid wearing one. But I was a Boy Scout, a patrol leader, not a biker. I wore the jacket because it was cool and had a lot of pockets. My Dad gave it to me. He found it.

All through highschool I was sort of an outsider, but I don't recall being shunned by the popular kids. I simply had a different area of interest than they did. They liked sports; I liked hunting and trapping. They chased girls; I was had secret crushes but never dated until college.

I was different. I got my first pistol in the eighth grade. I got my first .44 magnum when I was a sophomore with money I earned trapping on snowshoes. I took my rifle to school and left it in my car to go hunting after school. Lots of kids did. I never thought it was strange, and I never shot any thing when I was a kid except several deer, a few elk, a bear, and a few gophers. All legally. It was a big deal to buy my tags every year, part of the fun.

It would have been easy to do what these kids did, but why? It would have ruined my life. Where's the sense in that??? I knew it then and I know it now. These kids don't. I think we have to find out WHY they don't. If we could change that I think these tragedies will stop.
