Re: CompuUSA

They have been staggering ever since their acquisition of the Computer City chain from Radio Shack. They also had a tough Q4, and are supposed to be hurting for cash. Intel may be financing their inventory for them - certainly Intel supported a CompUSA only $200 rebate on all Intel systems last weekend.

I wonder how much Intel makes on a Celeron 700 after the $200 rebate?

When Intel is reduced to paying bankrupt store chains $200 to sell $100 processors, it's a sign that Intel dominance in that sector is over.

Last weekend's ads:

Mar 04 -
b=Best Buy c=Circuit City u=CompUSA r=Radio Shack bto=Build to Order
Note that some details (flat screen monitor, amount of memory, better printer, etc)
means the relative value of these systems is not completely reflected below. The
AOL/Compuserve rebate is supposed to be changing or ending. So this list reflects
other rebates, but not the $400 dollar one from AOL.
bto means I added $150 to bto prices to reflect a shipping estimate.
MSN means I subtracted $100 to relect value of 1 year of Internet

Intel's desperation to cling to some remaining presence in the retail sector is glaringly obvious, and costing them a lot of money. They are a sitting duck until they can get volume from a copper process - at least 6 months away for them. The question is, can AMD "get off a shot" (SMP or mobile) in that period?
