I disagree. There need be no underlying purpose. Have YOU ever read Camus? Man can give meaning to his own life. If you can believe in an imaginary friend, with no objective evidence, you can certainly believe your life has meaning- that doesn't mean it HAS objective meaning for anyone else, or that it even has meaning for you- anymore than believing in God, or the Easter Bunny makes those things real- but Santa certainly has meaning for the children who believe in him.

And God certainly has meaning for people who believe in him her or it- depending on which God or Gods they believe in- I'd submit that I don't like the way that sort of meaning tends to work itself out, but it certainly has meaning even though some if not all of those Gods people believe in probably have absolutely no meaning outside of the the human construction. Christians (for example) like to tell infidels that they are worshipping false Gods- but it is quite clear that these "false" Gods are capable of giving exactly the same sense of meaning to the life of the infidel (whoever they are), as the Christian theology is capable of giving to the Christian.
