man·date (mndt) n. 1. An authoritative command or instruction. 2. A command or an authorization given by a political electorate to its representative. The number of votes one garners has little to do with whether there is a mandate. Bush Sr. crushed Dukakis but had no real mandate. Luckily Bush Jr.is responding to his mandate by putting forth the programs the electorate wants and needs.
