Patrick,

`We see inefficiencies in direct models,'' Greg Petsch, Compaq's senior vice president of corporate operations and quality said after delivering a speech.

He said the system is unable to cope with larger customers from the corporate side.

Companies like Dell and Gateway, which sell directly to customers without going through distributors and other indirect channels, was ``well designed for small quantities'' like to small and medium-sized companies, Petsch said.

``But as they move into corporate accounts, it is not so efficient,'' he said.

If he's serious, maybe it's a good time to buy some long term CPQ puts! It's definitely a good time to sell CPQ!

In the local paper (Austin Statesman) DELL PR article announced that their new factory in North Austin, which was just officially opened yesterday began assembling computers in early April.

In this new plant, they assemble, test and prepare computers for shipment in less than five hours compared with eight hours at the existing high-volume factory a mile to the north.

Product quality is up about 40%.

He (Maxwell, who came to DELL from CQP about four years ago)said that DELL will need an additional big factory in the Austin area within a year.

The company plans to bring key corporate customers to the factory to demonstrate how PCs are made quickly but still customized to the purchaser's order.
Once potential buyers tour its facotries, Dell clinches 95 % of the sales.

(The above are excerpts from the article. If anyone is interested, I can provide the rest)
