But seriously, gains on investment are not the same as
earned income. Maybe government-backed fixed income
investments can be considered earned income, but most
certainly not equities. People take a risk when they
invest in stocks (which BTW the government will not share
nor mitigate), but they still want a part of the proceeds.

IMO, the government has no business taxing gains or
subsidizing losses. BWTHDIK, since I consider taxation
as confiscatory by it's very nature.
