Mike I've heard the naysay arguments and It's just the perspective of if the glass half full or empty. I reject the corrupt the organization argument. It's a judgemental opinion that assumes the folks don't have common sense.
In general the best and most morally straight get involved. Will the money attract some scum? yes Are there will be a few instances where a corruption may happen? yes But my belief is that honest decent folks in general will do a good job and any money spent will go to the people and not government employees. More lives will be saved in the corporal sense and many more good American citizen will be created.

Now you say the Catholic church came out. What does that mean? The priests and lay people are citizens and have a right to express and opinion. This is not the opinion of the Catholic church. Oh can you reference a letter from the Pope. Dear you attend a chruch and hear a sermon on this issue. Or did you just hear a priest express his opinion.

So having folks in need dealing with loving caring folks has many positives. Will loving caring folks make mistakes? yes. but most likely less harmful to those in need and at 1/10 the cost. I also see many of the helped becoming helpers and this is a good thing.
