Dr. J continues to educate the non-cdma wireless world on the benefits of cdma2000 and 1X.

I listened to the conference and came away with continued optimism that QCOM has the goods and it probably makes many people mad. I could not find anything that would be otherwise positive for QCOM. That isn't to say that the analysts will find something like the rain forest to knock down the Q.

Of the two questions asked the second one came from an analyst who is simply ignorant. He first states that TXN says the world is going GSM and Dr. J says the world is going cdma and then asks who are we to believe? Talking about comparing apples to oranges.

A couple of interesting comments -
* When 3G is rolled out in Europe, the users will still need multi mode phones (3G and 2G).
* France Telecom comment about GPRS getting 10kbs when used in the same time slot as voice. GPRS would get 60 to 80 kbps but they would have to devote an entire carrier which is not going to be economical for any GSM operator.
* Dr J continues to expand on the virtues of what w-cdma is going to have to go through such as standards, system testing and the inter-operability with different equipment manufacturers, let alone system optimization. While cdma2000 is already commercial available and 1X is being rolled out as commercial.

* the network operator cost of data for GPRS - $.42 / MB
while the cost for the network operator for 1xEV -$.022/MB

QCOM continues to place more software on the asic, which will make it increasingly difficult for competitors to catch up. BREW as well Q's Wirless Internet Launch Pad is going to give NOK fits as they and others who are tying to develop asics are finding themselves several versions behind.

Docomo's w-cdma roll out will be extremely limited and will probably not be large scale commercialized for a couple of years.

One of the most interesting comments made by Dr. J was the reference to the phone becoming a powerful computer.

Lastly and ironically, as Dr. J was talking about how cdma2000 and 1x and 1xev was develop by qcom with regards to better economics for the operator and as a result works better than w-cdma which was developed by committee and a number of people wanted to claim IPR. Just imagine some EU companies got IPR for dumbing down cdma to get the EU version of w-cdma (hey it doesn't work as well, its more expensive and its a few years late, but at least you'll pay more).

Nothing would surprise me about comments made by analysts. But as a long time QCOM shareholder, I never get tired of listening to Dr. J. speak. QCOM has the goods and they know it. More education of the network operators is needed and I suspect it is going on as we speak.
FWIW
