They may sell below overall cost but many co's do this to gain advantage. It's not illegal in most cases.

And then there's the other approach- there's a big furniture chain in my area that advertises its "underprices" on all their lines. Well some of their products are sold under exclusive geography agreements, so if somebody wants to buy the xyz hutch from someone else they may have to go to N. Carolina to find it and then pay for trucking to get it delivered. So the "underprice" may well be the only price there is in the whole region!

So amzn is not the only one in this game.
