cdmaOne Tops 22 Million Internet and Data Users on Mobile Devices; CDMA Technology Drives Wireless Internet Penetration Worldwide COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 7, 2001--Wireless Internet and data use on code division multiple access (CDMA) networks is growing substantially and this trend is expected to continue with the increased availability of Web-enabled handsets, according to the CDMA Development Group (CDG) (www.cdg.org).
On this note, the CDG announced that there are more than 22 million subscribers using wireless Internet services over cdmaOne networks. This represents nearly 30 percent penetration of cdmaOne subscribers.
"CDMA is the world's primary enabling technology for wireless Internet and data, and will continue to be the driver of wireless data adoption, especially as cdmaOne carriers around the world proceed with their plans for initial deployments of third generation 307 kbps capable cdma2000 networks in the second half of 2000, while further deployments will continue through 2001," said Perry LaForge, executive director for the CDG.
"With the increasing availability of Internet- and data-enabled devices, the CDG expects that there will be more than 50 million cdmaOne- and cdma2000-based wireless Internet users by year's end. In particular, we see this growth coming from within the existing cdmaOne markets of North America and Asia, combined with the continued expansion in Latin America and China."
According to industry analysts, sales of Internet-ready wireless phones, the most popular mobile-access device, will surpass one billion annually by 2004. By the end of 2002, virtually all wireless phones will be pre-loaded with mini-browsers and will be Internet-enabled.
CDMA manufacturers continue to roll out a number of Internet data and 3G devices, including phones, smart phones and PC cards. Devices are commercially deployed on cdmaOne(TM) networks operating at 14 kbps and 64 kbps, as well as 3G (cdma2000) networks optimized at 307 kbps.
The CDMA Development Group is a nonprofit trade association formed to foster the worldwide development, implementation and use of cdmaOne and 3G CDMA. The 110 member companies of the CDG include many of the world's largest wireless operators and equipment manufacturers. The primary activities of the CDG include development of features and services, public relations, education and seminars, regulatory affairs and international support. Currently, there are more than 500 individuals working within various CDG subcommittees on CDMA-related matters.
