RESEARCH ALERT-Goldman downgrades Broadcom

NEW YORK, March 7 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs on Wednesday
said it cut the rating and earnings outlook for Broadcom Corp.
<BRCM.O>, a day after the communications chipmaker cut its 2001
guidance, amid a slowdown in customer orders because of the
sluggish economy.
Analyst Nathaniel Cohn cut his rating for the Irvine,
Calif., company to market performer from market outperformer.
He also sliced his 2001 earnings estimate to 45 cents from
$1.25 a share.
Broadcom, whose integrated circuits are used in over 90
percent of cable modems and digital set-top boxes, on Tuesday
sharply cut revenue and earnings estimates for the first
quarter.
Shares closed at $47-7/8 on Tuesday on Nasdaq, near the low
end of the 52-week range of $40-3/4 to $274-3/4.
