Young, I agree with you that Iomega's strategy is to keep the momentum going through the 3rd quarter and into the Christmas season. If they are to become the standard, they must be aggressive during this window of opportunity. Clearly, this rebate shows how serious they are.

I do have some concern's however. This drop in price comes sooner than what I would have expected. Could it be that unit sales have slowed down a little? If this were the case, it could explain how they solved their supply problem. They must have a strong 3rd quarter. Anything less would certainly be a significant setback.

Although this move is an apparent blow to Compaq, I don't think they're going to go down without a fight. They're fierce competitors and have been pretty quiet up to this point. The next move is theirs, and with both their reputation and investment on the line, I wouldn't rule out an announcement like a major OEM agreeing to offer the LS120.

By the way, I'm not so certain that the retailers consider the rebate as a "thank you". They still have to pay the same price for their inventory. Iomega gets to hold onto that $50 until the customer buys the product, sends in the rebate, the rebate is processed, mailed and cashed. This move is good for Iomega's cash flow, but not for the retailers'.
