Kibo, thanks for all that! Very interesting. Maybe Iridium is going to work. What about cost though - that will be a problem for them. Their commercial operation date is now the SAME as Globalstar - late 1998. They have lost all their lead.

Bernard Schwartz's comments that launch availability is the controlling factor on supply of extra services means the pressure will really be on costs and the highest bidder [that is the one with the greatest profit margin] will be able to buy the available launches.

There has been a change of plan at some stage too! 18 months ago, Globalstar was going to use old USSR MIRV nuke launchers. Nothing at all about that now. Since Loral has been in the satellite launching business for a long time, I imagine they have got plenty of launches lined up - they have added incentive to ensure Globalstar success.
