So, if you don't accept the God hypothesis, you're hosed?

Man didn't exist for most of the world's history, as scientists not of the creation variety understand it. Which leaves the "idea" of God pretty much out of "the big picture" for all but the last 10 or 20k years. Or maybe 100k years, if you really want to stretch it. The reality that existed before man doesn't say much about "the fact and presence of this God" one way or the other.

So, man comes on the scene, and invents this God, who mostly looks to be the image and likeness of man rather than vice versa, and it's all a "fact"? Seems like sort of a crumbly edifice to me.
