Humble one,

re: In the arena of business and technical competence women have a lot of distracting handicaps to overcome, such as having babies, talking about their hair or what clothes to wear, what finger nail polish or lipstick to use. The worthless details go on and on. Yes, the clothes all have to match, and it all clutters up the brain.

Man, I didn't want to get drawn into this one.

Men have a few distractions as well. We have sports, pursuing women (which folks claim takes up about 50% of our concentration, at least when we are younger than I am), taking care of our clothes and appearance (I know a lot of men who are more vain than women). How many badly dressed male CEO's have you seen lately?

Let me ask you this. I assume you will admit that three times as many women are participating, at higher levels, in the business world than there were 25 years ago. Do you think that "Smarts seem to me to be the only excluding factor" that has changed this demographic? Have women gotten smarter in the last 25 years? Or were there other "excluding factors" that kept women out of the employment marketplace?

Is promotion opportunity, at the high end, equal for men and women? I don't think so.

John
