Well said. I agree with you for the sake of encouraging individualism.
I can think of some exceptions:
"...and if we are not what we think we are does it matter?" Good question for Don Quihote.

One time, would be when mental illness keeps a person from being able to function in a healthy way.

In the social sense it may matter. I have had concerns for people from time to time, who had a self perception of their social "role" in a social circle that didn't match other peoples perceptions of them. This can create conflict in a group.
