A shift has occurred that's pretty obvious to most people now. A business model based on advertising revenue is a poor one. YHOO (evidence today's announcement) is struggling along with the rest of the .com sector. My opinion is that YHOO and others will be moving to some sort of subscription model in order to become profitable. No longer will it be simply "free" to surf yahoo and use their various offerings.

I might be off base, but it's a theory that's been kicked around more often than not lately. If this subscription model gains popularity, MSFT will benefit.

MSFT's MSN sites are the 2nd most visited of all web sites. Only the entire conglomeration of AOL sites are more visited. Once YHOO and the others start asking for a monthly fee to use their services, MSFT will be able to do the same. There's been some discussion of this occurring in the near future in regard to certain aspects of MSN.

This will turn MSFT's various sites into a revenue generator beyond what is obtained from advertising and beyond what the MSN subscribers already pay for the ISP services.

IMO,
Dave
