V1,

<<Any thoughts as to whether it is possible to pass mad Cows disease transgenically.>>

No one is quite sure how BSE is passed. We're not even sure what the infectious agent (the "prion") is, though current opinion favors some type of replicating protein. That said, most of the concern has been over consumption of solid animal products and by-products, I'm not sure about milk. Perhaps JFQ with his knowledge of British biotech can tell us whether there has been any linkage to milk?

Of course milk contains host proteins and even host cells shed into the nilk so this may be something to consider. This is part of the bigger question that Andy and I were discussing about contamination. Cow's milk is not always pathogen free. How do they ensure sterility? Do they pasteurize the milk (or does this denature the product protein)? Is there another step in the purification which removes contaminants/pathogens? And will this remove 100% of "prions"? This might be a good question for Steve Push. (If you don't get a chance to ask him, I will, after I read through the next 200 posts here and the 500 over on the LGND explosion, er, thread)

Hope your trips were as relaxing as mine. Or at least profitable.
