KDDI's Handset Can Download Games

TOKYO (Nikkei)--DDI Corp. (9433), known as KDDI, announced Wednesday that it will begin marketing a new type of cellular phone in late March that can be used to download simple games.

The move is in response to the i-appli service being offered by rival wireless operator NTT DoCoMo Inc. (9437).

The C407H handset, made by Hitachi Ltd. (6501), features a total of 500KB of memory, which is twice the amount of existing handsets. It can download up to 50KB of game software, which is five times more than the handsets that support NTT DoCoMo's i-appli service.

The new phone also features a handset version of the Japanese-language conversion software ATOK that simplifies the task of creating e-mail messages.

At the same time, KDDI will also market the C408P, a handset made by Matsushita Communications Industrial Co. (6781) that can store up to 35 karaoke songs or 70 melodies.
