Samsung Launches First Mobile Phone Using Cdma in India
By Asia Pulse , Mar 08 2001

Korean electronics giant Samsung on Wednesday launched its first mobile phone using
CDMA technology in India.

Korean electronics giant Samsung on Wednesday launched its first mobile phone using
CDMA (Code Divisional Multiple Access) technology in India, soon after the government
allowed basic operators to provide limited mobility.
The company also announced the launch of three GSM phone models and said it will invest
US$1 million over the next six months in setting up 50 sales and service centres for its
telecom product range.

"We greatly appreciate the Indian government's decision to give limited mobility to the basic
operators in India. The Indian market is strategic, high potential market for us," Managing
Director of Samsung Electronics India Information and Telecommunications Ltd (SEIIT) K S
Kim said.

He said the Indian market was expected to have two million subscribers of CDMA technology
this year
, and this was a vast opportunity which Samsung has tried to tap with the launch.

Kim said CDMA was the most promosing technology in the short-run, and that together with
its strong presence in the GSM range of mobile phones, Samsung expects to be a leading
telecom company in the country this year.

Apart from the CDMA phone, it has also brought a phone with MP3 player, besides two
Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) enabled models.
