Tantivy Introduces Internet-CDMA -- I-CDMA -- Portable Wireless Broadband Technology; First Fully IP-Based Technology Makes Broadband Solutions Portable and Affordable
--Note comments at the bottom from Eddie.-- Cooters MELBOURNE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 8, 2001--Tantivy Communications Inc., a provider of portable wireless broadband technology, today announced its I-CDMA(TM) wireless protocol. I-CDMA is the only technology available today to enable portable, end-to-end, wireless broadband Internet access. I-CDMA allows replication of the rich desktop Internet experience, offering a realistic answer to end users' unmet needs for a portable, yet affordable wireless data service, giving them anywhere, always-on Internet access.
By optimizing for portability, Tantivy's I-CDMA technology brings clear advantages to both carriers and end users in three key areas: speed, capacity and coverage. The technology can support per user access speeds of 368 Kbps for downloading and 224 Kbps for uploading data--an experience comparable to today's high-speed wired alternative solutions. Tantivy's portable I-CDMA technology can support 1,000 users per 1.25 MHz channel--10 times the user capacity of other 2G and 3G proposed network technologies.
I-CDMA technology can be easily deployed as an overlay to a service provider's existing wireless infrastructure. It provides broader coverage areas for users within a cell site, ensuring a consistent quality of service to the edge of the cell, meaning users get the same data rates wherever they are within an IS-95 cellprint. It also ensures better in-building penetration and improves fade margin. Tantivy's I-CDMA technology is spectrally compatible with IS-95 and based on industry standard Internet Protocol.
"Through our I-CDMA portable wireless broadband solution, Tantivy is achieving its vision of providing `anywhere' Internet," said Randy Roberson, president and CEO of Tantivy. "This technology will give consumers affordable access to rich Internet content with near symmetric uplink and downlink capabilities for applications such as streaming media or opening e-mail files with large attachments. I-CDMA technology is enabling service providers to improve their cost efficiencies as well as provide them with an opportunity for new revenue."
Tantivy's broadband solution is ideal for anyone who needs the freedom to take the Internet with them and for those needing a fast and reliable connection to the Internet when wireline technologies aren't an option.
It is ideal for the business executive who needs immediate access to his or her corporate intranet while sitting in the airport, an architect who needs to transmit drawings from a construction site that doesn't yet have power or wired connections, or for a realtor on a property site who needs to e-mail property information or photos to a prospective buyer in another state real-time.
Tantivy's IP-based I-CDMA technology offers accelerated Return On Investment (ROI) benefits compared with the typical ROI for voice systems. Because I-CDMA technology can be deployed as a system overlay, service providers need only upgrade their existing base stations to support broadband data transmission or install a new base station that already incorporates Tantivy's technology.
Tantivy has developed the I-CDMA-based Tantivy Access Network link (TANlink(TM) system including infrastructure equipment and consumer products in order to seed the marketplace. Tantivy is licensing silicon, software and reference designs for consumer device and infrastructure manufacturers. The essential elements of the TANlink system are a wireless data router, known as a TANlink Base Station Transceiver Subsystem, located at the cell site; a subscriber modem known as a TANlink Access Unit (TAU); and a Wireless Internet Facility (WIF) for carrier operations, administration and maintenance.
"The way this industry looks at wireless broadband solutions will change significantly in the next 12 to 18 months," said Iain Gillott, president of iGillottResearch. "To be successful with the mobile operators, a wireless broadband solution must offer sufficient speed, capacity and range and be extremely cost effective to implement. From what I've seen to date from Tantivy, it appears they will be a strong player within this timeframe."
"Tantivy's I-CDMA delivers fast, reliable, non-line-of-sight, broadband service, ideally suited to the demands of service providers looking to address the wireless DSL and SoHo markets," said Ed Snyder of JP Morgan H&Q. "Tantivy's portable solution is unique in leveraging existing infrastructure and channels, setting a new standard for providing effective solutions that meet industry demand."
