Happened to be listening to the radio this morning at an unusual time for me, driving back to the office from a meeting, and heard I think Dr Joy Brown on an interesting rant. Basically said that we should not be surprised that our children take to shooting people when they feel victimized. Our national icon is the cowboy, a societal rebel who can't get along with other people but goes off by himself and solves his problems with a gun. The reason people insist on having guns is usually to protect them from bigger and stronger people (including in some cases the government), essentially bullies. So the parents have the guns to protect themselves from bullies; why should we be surprised when their kids, when they get threatened by bullies, take the guns and use them for protection.

I haven't put it as well as she did, but the bully defense, including the concept of government as being seen by some as the biggest bully of all, was a twist on the gun discussion that I hadn't come across before.
