China Unicom plans to boost CDMA capacity fivefold in Shanghai, threefold in China



(8 March 2001) Zhao Le, general manager of China Unicom’s Shanghai branch, said
that the latter would recommence development of the code division multiple access
(CDMA) mobile communications network.

China Unicom established a new development plan after the management and
operation of the CDMA network was officially transferred to the company. By the end of
2001, Shanghai’s CDMA network will support 500,000 subscribers, and the number will
increase to 3 million by 2003, according to the March 7 Wenhui Bao (Wenhui Daily).

The total capacity of the nationwide CDMA network will be 13 million users and the
interconnection of the network will be completed by the end of the year. Within three
years, China’s total CDMA capacity will be 50 million
