Brocade says business improved a bit in early March
SAN FRANCISCO, March 8 (Reuters) - Business improved a bit in early March after February turned out as poorly as expected, the chief financial officer of storage networks parts maker Brocade Communications Systems Inc. (NasdaqNM:BRCD - news) said on Thursday.

``We anticipated February would not be that good, and in fact it turned out that way,'' Michael Byrd said on the sidelines of an investment conference. ``The first week in March was better (than February), but it is only one week.''

Brocade cuts its sales target for the fiscal year, while announcing first-quarter results on Feb. 21, to around $750 million from a previously expected $830 million, citing the shaky economy.

The maker of switches which tie together computer storage networks had been seen by many as able to pass through economic weakness unscathed.

``We are very focused on managing the business and managing our expense levels, so that we retain the profit ratios of the company,'' Byrd said, speaking on the sidelines of a Lehman Brothers conference.

Business in Europe was still strong, he added, responding to fears that U.S. economic weakness had spread overseas.

Asked if he had seen weakness in Europe, he said: ``Not at all.''
