I was asked to post this by a lurker. It's extends and partly contradicts the discussion in one of my messages that pointed out that Itanium actually has a lower set associativity than just about anything else on the market (which would make it a poor choice for multiusr servers). This message points out that the low set associativity clearly doesn't hurt its (single user) SPEC performance. But if that performance is the result of HP's compiler technology...

Stumbled upon this 1.8 MByte PDF.

intel.com

Check out page 5. That works out to be 700-800 SpecFp2000, that
isnt' a disappointment. I finally figured out what is going on and you
can read the comp.arch thread. Bottom line is that the compiler
technology , the gcc folks aren't going to get, which means Intel
has to give away their compiler or the Linux folks won't use Itanium
and Alpha becomes their future. If they give it away, that really
pisses off HP and anyone else trying to sell Itanium compilers as
they won't be able to outdo Intel. Very interesting politcal situation
is what it boils down to.
