mr.mark,

......but imo, joe was paralyzed with fear going in to the foreman fight.

Frazier was affected by many things going into the Foreman fight. Unfortunately, IMHO, fear wasn't one of them. Yancy Durham's death and a desire to live "the good life" were big factors. And styles. The adage "Styles make fights" was never more applicable than for Frazier vs Big George. Frazier's style was tailor made for Foreman. Foreman had Frazier's number. Just as he would've had Tyson's. If they fought 10 times, Foreman would've been 10 for 10 (although Frazier's performance improved in their 2nd bout)

Smokin' Joe had reached the top of the mountain after beating Ali. He wanted to enjoy life and his great accomplishment. He finally made the big money. He had lost some zest for the fight game. Do you blame him? It was a long road from Beaufort, South Carolina to fighting Ali in the biggest fight in boxing history. And then he lost his father figure and manager Yank Durham. A tough one-two punch for anybody.

Joe weighed 205 1/2 for Ali - Frazier I. This was his ideal fighting weight. Frazier waited 10 months before stepping into the ring against Terry Daniels in January 1972. Ali had already fought 3 times before Frazier made his first title defense. Frazier weighed 215 1/2 for the Daniels fight. His highest weight ever. Four months later, Frazier weighed 217 1/2 against the meatpacker Ron Stander. He stepped into the ring against Foreman in slightly better shape. He weighed 214 lbs.

Ali - Frazier II, while an excellent fight, lacked a certain something. Frazier finally found that something in the Thrilla in Manilla, but by that time, he was well past his peak and spent as a fighter. Frazier was never the same destructive fighting machine after the first Ali fight.
